GIF Art Archive is a website developed as part of a doctoral research project at the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV), Spain, focused on the animated GIF as an artistic medium and cultural practice.

The aim of this website is to contribute to the documentation, preservation, and dissemination of GIF art by bringing together historical, theoretical, and artistic perspectives. This research explores the evolution of the GIF from its origins as a digital file format to its widespread use as a creative and expressive medium in contemporary art.

You can find two main sections:

• Timeline (currently under development): traces key moments in the history of the GIF, highlighting technological, cultural, and artistic milestones.
• Artists: a growing collection of artist profiles and selected works that showcases the diversity of contemporary GIF art practices from around the world.

This website forms part of an ongoing research process and will continue to grow as new materials, artists, and historical resources are incorporated.
